While the vast majority of Apple Intelligence features were built by Apple in-house, including most new Siri capabilities, the company has nonetheless partnered with OpenAI to add ChatGPT’s powers as a supplementary AI tool in iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and iPadOS 18.\nHere’s everything you should know about ChatGPT’s Siri integration.\nChatGPT is getting baked into iOS 18, so enabling it with Siri won’t require downloading any additional apps.\nMore than that, ChatGPT won’t have any setup process at all. There’s no need to create or log in to an OpenAI account before Siri can tap into the AI service.\nInstead, whenever you ask Siri something in iOS 18 that it believes ChatGPT is best suited to answer, you’ll be given the option of using ChatGPT for that request. No setup necessary.\nOne of the two main ways ChatGPT will benefit iOS 18 users is through answering the type of “world knowledge” questions that Siri can’t.\nApple used the phrase “world knowledge” several times in its WWDC presentation, contrasting it with the “personal knowledge” that Siri specializes in—questions about your calendar, your messages, your reminders.\nEssentially what this means, though, is that ChatGPT will be able to answer the sort of questions that Siri fails at. All with the power of GPT4o.\nToday, when Siri isn’t capable of answering a given question, it tends to do a web search: “I found this on the web.”\nIn iOS 18, it will instead pass the baton to ChatGPT so you can get a truly helpful answer. Examples include:\nThe knowledge provided by ChatGPT should drastically improve Siri’s usefulness across Apple devices.\nThe other main areas where iOS 18 taps into ChatGPT are text composition and image creation.\nWhile Apple Intelligence does come with its own set of Apple-built writing tools, those are focused on helping rewrite or proofread your existing work.\nSiri in iOS 18 won’t be able to draft an email for you from scratch, nor will the built-in Apple Intelligence writing tools—but you will be able to pull in ChatGPT for the job.\nWhether you’re sending email, messages, or starting a new essay, you’ll be able to use ChatGPT to compose that text from scratch based on your request.\nThrough that same compose tool, you can ask ChatGPT to create an image for you, and it will do it—despite the fact that Apple Intelligence has its own image creation powers.\nAll of this is obviously already possible using ChatGPT for web or its app, but baking its powers into the system will make them accessible anywhere you’re working.\nWhile Apple users generally put a high degree of trust in the company’s privacy practices, should that same trust extend to OpenAI, who’s powering these new iOS 18 capabilities?\nThe answer is: it doesn’t have to, because OpenAI is being limited in what data it receives.\nDuring the WWDC keynote, Apple exec Craig Federighi promised that with iOS 18’s ChatGPT integration, “Your requests and information will not be logged.”\nThis means OpenAI won’t be able to string together your various requests to build a profile and potentially sell that data to third parties.\nThe other key piece of Apple’s privacy story with its ChatGPT integration is that whenever you make a Siri request that will tap into ChatGPT, you have to provide your explicit permission first.\nTo ensure that your data only goes to ChatGPT when you explicitly want it to, Siri will present a permission dialog as needed to receive your consent.\nThis extra step makes ChatGPT opt-in rather than opt-out. It also, unfortunately, creates potential for an annoying amount of permission boxes to be displayed.\nHopefully, even if it isn’t there at launch, Apple will provide a Settings toggle at some point to enable using ChatGPT without needing to give explicit permission every time.\nJust because you won’t need to use an OpenAI account doesn’t mean you can’t. iOS 18 will provide the option of signing in to your existing account if you’d like.\nOne benefit of signing into your account is that your ChatGPT activity through Siri will then be tied to that account. Which may be helpful if you prefer to keep all such activity linked to OpenAI.\nPerhaps a more significant benefit is that if you’re a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, Siri can tap into the extra features that plan provides. Current Plus features are outlined at the bottom of this page.\nChatGPT isn’t overtaking Siri. But it is going to complement Apple’s assistant in some key ways. Where Siri has historically failed, it will now get an OpenAI assist.\nThis is also just the beginning. Google Gemini is expected to be integrated with Siri too. Eventually, Siri may serve as the ultimate aggregator of AI assistants. Built on the foundation of Apple’s own AI tools, but bolstered by the best of its competitors.\nAre you excited about using ChatGPT in iOS 18? Now, a recently-fixed ChatGPT privacy clanger has everyone looking sideways at Apple's new AI bedfellow.\nAs reported by The Verge, \"Until Friday, OpenAI’s recently launched ChatGPT macOS app had a potentially worrying security issue: it wasn’t hard to find your chats stored on your computer and read them in plain text.\" The result? Anyone with access to your Mac and malicious intent \"could easily read your conversations with ChatGPT and the data contained within them,\" possibly even using a remote app.\nThe issue was spotted by developer Pedro José Pereira Vieito, who uncovered that \"it was possible to have another app access those files and show you the text of your conversations right after they happened.\" By simply changing the name of a ChatGPT conversation file, the chat therein would be revealed in plain text.\nContinue reading\nNaturally, OpenAI has released an update to encrypt these chats, so if you have downloaded ChatGPT on macOS, you should do that right away. \"We are aware of this issue and have shipped a new version of the application which encrypts these conversations\" OpenAI told The Verge.\nTurns out, Pereira Vieito discovered the issue because he was curious about OpenAI's decision to opt out of using Apple's app sandbox protections on macOS, which are only required for apps offered on the macOS App Store.\nThe issue has been squashed without much fuss, but it's a worrying misstep for a company that has just signed a major co-beneficial deal to bring its AI LLM to all of Apple's\nbest iPhones\n, iPads, and Macs.\nApple prides itself on making products with bulletproof privacy and security measures, and its Apple Intelligence offering is no exception. Apple was keen to highlight the importance of on-device processing for its new AI tools, as well as Private Cloud Compute for requests and features that require cloud-based processing. Much of Apple's branding and reputation relies heavily on the perception that it is a company that thrives on privacy, so Apple is sure to be watching OpenAI closely. There's no prospect of Apple pulling the plug but with rumors of a Google Gemini deal and confirmation that ChatGPT isn't going to be Apple's exclusive AI partner for all things \"GPT\", Open AI will need to keep its ducks in a row if it wants to hang onto that seat at the table.\nMacBook Air M2 13-inch| $999 $849 at Amazon\nGet ready for Apple Intelligence with the cheapest Mac you can buy right now. This move follows Apple’s announcement to integrate ChatGPT into its devices, marking a significant partnership in the tech industry.\nApple Strengthens AI Partnership with OpenAI, Gains Board Observer Role Amid Integration of ChatGPT\nAs part of a groundbreaking agreement disclosed last month, Apple will be granted an observer role on OpenAI's board, further strengthening the relationship between the previously unlikely partners.\nAccording to individuals with knowledge of the matter (via Bloomberg ), Phil Schiller, Apple's former marketing chief and current director of the App Store, was selected for the position. The individual, who requested anonymity due to the nature of the matter, stated that he would not be operating as a full-fledged director or board observer.\nThe action was taken in response to Apple's June announcement that ChatGPT would be included in a suite of artificial intelligence features for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. According to the individuals, Schiller has not attended any meetings, and the board arrangement will be implemented later this year. The situation's specifics may still be subject to change.\nThe board observer role will align Apple with Microsoft, OpenAI's primary AI technology provider and most prominent financial supporter. The position enables an individual to participate in board meetings without the ability to vote or exercise any other director powers. Nevertheless, observers do acquire an understanding of the company's decision-making process.\nApple and OpenAI representatives declined to provide commentary.\nThe tech titans, who have been rivals and partners for decades, may encounter complications because Microsoft and Apple participate in board meetings. Future AI initiatives between OpenAI and Microsoft will likely be discussed at specific OpenAI board meetings. Microsoft may wish to exclude Schiller from these discussions. Board observers frequently comply and depart meetings during discussions that are perceived as sensitive.\nPhil Schiller Joins OpenAI Board as Observer, Enhancing Apple's AI Strategy and Collaboration\nSchiller's extensive experience as a brand administrator at Apple renders him well-suited for the observer position even though he does not oversee the company's artificial intelligence initiatives. In 2020, the 64-year-old resigned from his marketing director position and is currently employed as an Apple Fellow. He continues supervising the company's product launch events and the App Store. In addition to his position at Apple, he serves as a director at Illumina, a medical technology corporation.\nThrough the partnership, Apple is collaborating with the most significant and influential AI start-up, OpenAI. However, the business is also renowned for its controversy and disruption. Last year, OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer, Sam Altman, was momentarily removed from his position due to allegations that he was not sufficiently transparent with the board. The organization has also faced criticism for its failure to acknowledge the safety concerns associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and its use of a synthetic voice that bore a striking resemblance to actress Scarlett Johansson without prior consent.\nAccording to SCMP, Apple's AI strategy encompasses in-house capabilities in addition to the OpenAI integration. Its technology, Apple Intelligence, transcribes voice memos, generates custom emoticons and images, and summarizes articles and notifications. The initiative also encompasses a redesigned version of Apple's Siri digital assistant; however, most of these improvements will be implemented in the following year.\nAt present, Apple's partnership with OpenAI is not a financial arrangement. OpenAI is gaining access to hundreds of millions of potential users rather than money-changing hands. On the other hand, Apple acquired a chatbot feature in high consumer demand. Additionally, users can access a paid version of ChatGPT on Apple devices, which could result in the iPhone manufacturer incurring App Store fees.\nApple continues to discuss providing supplementary chatbots to customers with Alphabet's Google and start-up Anthropic. It is also negotiating potential agreements with Baidu and Alibaba Group Holding to make its AI features available on devices in China. Apple Intelligence will initially be available in American English, followed by an international rollout.\nWhile it is not uncommon for high-ranking Apple executives to serve as directors of other organizations, it is exceedingly uncommon for them to join the boards of high-profile partners. Apple did, however, briefly occupy a board seat at DiDi Global after investing US$1 billion in the China-based Uber rival.\nPhoto: Microsoft Bing\n", "score": 1.1261664020795312 }, { "name": "Apple to get OpenAI board observer seat for integrating ChatGPT in iOS 18. Later on, it was revealed that while OpenAI was getting access to millions of iPhone users via the new partnership, Apple isn't paying the company for leveraging its technology in iOS 18. However, a new report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurnman has revealed that Apple is also getting an OpenAI observer role as part of the agreement it had worked out with the Sam Altman led company.\nThe report states that Phil Schiller, Head of Apple's Apple app store and former marketing chief, has been chosen to take the board observer role. The observer role would entail that Schiller could attend OpenAI board meetings but he cannot vote on any board decisions.\nSchiller had stepped down down as Apple's head of marketing in 2020 and is currently employed as an ‘Apple Fellow’. Apart from heading the App Store, the veteran also looks after Apple's product launch events. Apart from his Apple work, Schiller is also a director at a medical technology company called Illumina Inc.\nThe board observer role will put Apple in similar stead as Microsoft, a company which it has a mixed history with. While Microsoft and Apple are stark competitors in the PC race, the Satya Nadella-led company has also offered lucrative deals in the past to replace Google as the default search engine on iPhones.\nGurnman states the addition of Apple on OpenAI board could be an issue when discussions related to AI initiatives between Microsoft and OpenAI are discussed in these board meetings. He does state though that board members usually do oblige and exit meetings when sensitive discussions take place.\nNotably, Microsft has invested around $13 billion in OpenAI and also allows the AI startup access to many of its cloud and computing resources needed to run ChatGPT and other AI technology.\n", "score": 1.0143343402687195 }, { "name": "Apple App Store Chief Phil Schiller Is the Latest Big Tech Exec to Join OpenAI’s Board", "url": "https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/apple-app-store-chief-phil-schiller-is-the-latest-big-tech-exec-to-join-openai-s-board/ar-BB1pmhwH", "image": { "contentUrl": "https://observer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/07/GettyImages-1173663853.jpg?quality=80", "thumbnail": { "contentUrl": "https://www.bing.com/th?id=OVFT.OHWEI33foLryka6KgBDXZy&pid=News", "width": 700, "height": 505 } }, "description": "A close friend of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Schiller first joined the company in the 1980s and has been steadily with Apple since 1997. Apple did, however, briefly occupy a board seat at DiDi Global after investing US$1 billion in the China-based Uber rival.\nPhoto: Microsoft Bing\n", "score": 1.1261664020795312 } ] }, { "title": "Phil Schiller's Strategic New Role", "content": "Phil Schiller, a long-time Apple executive, has been appointed to the observer role on OpenAI's board, a strategic move that underscores Apple's commitment to advancing its AI initiatives [[c:4]]. Apple did, however, briefly occupy a board seat at DiDi Global after investing US$1 billion in the China-based Uber rival.\nPhoto: Microsoft Bing\n", "score": 1.1261664020795312 } ] }, { "title": "Impact on AI and Consumer Tech", "content": "The integration of ChatGPT into Apple's devices is set to revolutionize AI and consumer technology. Apple did, however, briefly occupy a board seat at DiDi Global after investing US$1 billion in the China-based Uber rival.\nPhoto: Microsoft Bing\n", "score": 1.1261664020795312 } ] }, { "title": "Inside ChatGPT’s Seamless Siri Integration", "content": "The integration of ChatGPT into Siri marks a significant leap in Apple's AI capabilities, seamlessly embedding OpenAI's advanced language model into iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and iPadOS 18 [[c:1]].
